Broken Plaid by Mika Tajima (American, b.1975)

In celebration of the opening of the Anne, Michael and Amelia Spalter New Media Gallery, the Museum's first gallery devoted to new media works, Broken Plaid by Mika Tajima (American, b.1975) was presented. Complementing the installation, other video works by Tajima were also shown in the gallery.

Mika Tajima on Broken Plaid
"In this installation, I took the Minimalist grid form and morphed it into a pop, video wall paper. The video begins as a very still plaid pattern made of red, yellow and green lines. Slowly, as if one was hallucinating, the lines begin moving and the pattern begins to lose shape and the video system, the foam sculpture/seating area continues the broken shapes of the video onto the floor area. I wanted to create a space that was part sculpture, part lounge, part viewing area, part installation. Each aspect of the installation falls somewhere in between being purely functional or purely aesthetic."
